Polysomnography (PSG), also known as a sleep study, is a non-invasive, overnight test that monitors and records physiological data during sleep to diagnose a variety of sleep disorders. It is considered the gold standard for diagnosing sleep-related breathing disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea.
Purpose
- Diagnose sleep disorders: Helps identify the root cause of conditions such as excessive daytime sleepiness, insomnia, and unusual behaviors during sleep.
- Determine a treatment plan: Assesses the severity of a sleep disorder and can be used to set up and adjust treatment, such as calibrating a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine for sleep apnea.
- Evaluate treatment effectiveness: Allows doctors to monitor a patient’s response to therapy.
